"Can be used as a great counseling manual for anyone wanting to get married, build their marriage, or save their marriage."

Beating the Marriage Odds
by William R. Campbell
182 Pages
ISBN 10:   1935265032 ISBN 13:   978-1-935265030
Publisher:
VMI Publishers/Deep River
Price: $11.69

This book caught my attention just by simply reading the back cover. The book can be used as a great counseling manual for anyone wanting to get married, build their marriage, or save their marriage. Although the book is written for Christians, it can be used for anyone. The book offers tons of principles that can help create healthy relationships. The book is backed up by statistics, examples, and scriptures. As Mr. Campbell states, in a marriage you work together as a team. I agree with that statement. As my husband and I have issues as any marriage, I love the fact that we work together as a team. From parenting to finances, and bonding.

He uses the example that I find so true: "If you were buying a car and the dealer told you that it had a 50% chance of being a lemon, would you buy it anyway?" Each chapter in the book has such great topics, real-life examples and scriptures that your and your spouse will find so helpful.

About the book:
The statistics are staggering. One out of every two marriages today will fail. What is the cause of such staggering statistics? What, if anything, can be done to keep couples together? This book offers concrete principles for building and sustaining a sound marriage. It outlines the most common causes of marriage failure and offers sound principles to avoid or correct such problems. Those who are considering marriage as well as those who have been married for years will benefit from real life examples and principles that they can apply to their own marriages. Beating the Marriage Odds also provides a valuable resource for pastors, small group leaders and counselors.

About the author:
After graduating from Bradley University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, William R. Campbell went on to have a successful career in publishing. After retiring to a rural Montana Community, he returned to Seminary where he earned a Master of Arts in Religion with an emphasis on counseling from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He has also earned a certificate in biblical counseling from the American Association of Christian Counselors.

Overall Grade: A+
Great prep course for the engaged, refresher for the married
It's no secret that America's divorce rate is 50%. What may surprise you is that this is true, even of Christian couples, those who vow before God to stay together "until death." It's shocking and sad.

But it doesn't matter whether you are Christian or not. If you have the average American mindset, and you're thinking about getting married, you've got a 50/50 chance of staying married.

Whatever happened to lifetime commitment? Is it possible to stay married, and never divorce? In his book, Beating the Marriage Odds, William R. Campbell says, resoundingly "Yes."

But wait a minute. Mr. Campbell has already been divorced... so what does he know?

Well, I read his book, and I'd say he knows a great deal. I've only been married since 2008, but that's already longer than many of my peers. And I'd state, without hesitating, that I have a solid marriage. How? By the training of my own parents, and the counsel of long-married couples in my church, before we wed, my husband and I read a book similar to this one.

If I were to sum up what this book advocates into just one word, it'd be Teamwork. In my own experience and observation, I'd say Campbell's right. No marriage--or other relationship, for that matter--can survive without teamwork. That means truly honest communication between partners, unqualified mutual respect, and determination to make it work. As Campbell points out, if you go into marriage thinking of failure, you're highly likely to fail. If failure isn't ever an option, you're much more likely to succeed.

Each chapter in this book focuses on one principle that any marriage--Christian or not--must have, in order to last. Actual examples illustrate the concepts, and Scripture and statistics are used to support them. In the back of the book are study helps that can be used by counselors or by a couple to help take each of these principles and apply them to real life.

This book is a powerful tool that should be read by every single looking to tie the knot.

Pros:
  • Solid tips based on Scripture, statistics, and personal experience
  • Tell-it-as-it-is approach
  • Easy to understand
  • Practical applications
  • Quick read--doesn't trail on and on
  • Study material and other helps in the back

Cons:
  • Can't honestly see any, unless you have a hard time reading books about marriage written by a previously divorced author. I personally like his unique perspective.

Can you believe that 1 out of every 2 marriages will end in divorce? Already I feel like I’m beating the marriage odds. My husband and I have been married for over 5 years and neither one of us went through premarital counseling. As much as I like to think we have a very solid marriage I know that a successful marriage takes work from both sides. Our marriage is a continual work in progress just like everyone else’s.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Beating the Marriage Odds. This book was written by a practicing pastor who along with his wife have a strong passion for helping couples in troubling marriages and couples who are thinking about getting married. This book is full of concrete principles to help strengthen your marriage or possible union. Throughout Beating the Marriage Odds William uses plenty of real world examples along with bible verses which I found very helpful.

I really like that in the back of the book there is a breakdown of each marriage principle chapter by chapter. I found it very easy to review. There are also review questions in the back of the book that you and your partner can do together.

I highly recommend this book to all couples considering marriage, couples in a troubled marriage or couples in a healthy marriage because even the healthiest marriages need constant work to make them last. For more information about this book visit Beating the Marriage Odds website.

Beating the Marriage Odds - Book Review!

The statistics are staggering. One out of every two marriages today will fail. What is the cause of such staggering statistics? What, if anything, can be done to keep couples together? It outlines the most common causes of marriage failure and offers sound principles to avoid or correct such problems. Beating the Marriage Odds also provides a valuable resource for pastors, small group leaders and counselors.

Thrifty Nifty Daddy and I have been married almost 6 years now, the best 6 years of my life. I like to think that we have a pretty good marriage, but I've always believed in always trying to make my marriage better. I think it's something you  need to invest time and energy into every day, which is why I requested the book, "Beating the Marriage Odds" by William R. Campbell to review.

Although this book was written with the intent to help couples who are engaged and planning a marriage, I still found things that I have been able to apply to our marriage now. There were many things that made me think and I truly believe that reading this book will improve my marriage. I especially appreciated the chapter on Fighting Fair and Mind Games.

I also appreciated that Mr. Campbell used not only real world examples to make his points, but he also included Biblical scripture to back up what he was saying. If you are married and would like to improve your marriage or if you are engaged and planning to marry soon, I would definitely recommend this book! I give it two thumbs up!

You can get a brand new copy of this book for as low as $2.49 on Amazon.com!

Beating the Marriage Odds - Book Review!

Review by Jenilee

I always love reading marriage books! Marriage is such an important area of our lives and we can always grow as we walk through life with our spouse!

This book, "Beating the Marriage Odds", catches your attention just by reading the back cover.

It uses the example of a lemon car. If you were buying a car and the dealer told you that it had a 50% chance of being a lemon, would you buy it anyway?

Well, those are the statistics that newly married couples are walking into when they say "I do."

"The statistics are staggering. Those who are considering marriage as well as those who have been married for years will benefit from real life examples and principles that they can apply to their own marriages."

I loved how the author walks you through the meaning of the traditional marriage vow and then directly shows how that is a vow made before your spouse and before God.

"For this promise to have effect, the couple must revere God." pg. 12

As we grow closer to God, we will grow closer to our spouse. What an amazing truth!

Each chapter has a great topic, real-life examples and scripture to help guide you and your spouse.

This is a great book for all married couples.

Beating the Marriage Odds Book Review

Bring It On Communications sent me Beating the Marriage Odds by William R. Campbell to read and review. It is published by Deep River Books in Sisters, Oregon(I didn't even know there was a city named Sisters) in 2009. After reading my review, if you're interested in getting a copy of this book for yourself, here's the ISBN number: 1-935265-03-2. It is available from Amazon.com for about $11.

Beating the Marriage Odds can be for an engaged couple, an already married couple who needs to review some marriage basics, or for a Christian counselor to use as a pre-marital counseling guide. Each chapter focuses on different aspects of marriage and ends with a principle to sum up the chapter and Scripture references to back it up. Also, throughout the book, the author references several other books that you can go to for additional help on a specific topic or principle. The end of the book has a review of all of the principles from each chapter, and review questions and answers for each chapter. There is also a wedding planner form and an outline for a counselor to use, broken into four counseling sessions.

There are several things that I liked about this book. I like that a lot of his examples of situations that other couples have gone through are usually taken from real couples, including the author and his wife. I like that Chapter 4 "True Love" includes a section on salvation, because any time someone is presenting Christian principles is a great time to talk about salvation! Chapter 6 is about communication and it includes a running example of a fictional couple - I found this chapter very helpful. I also liked Chapter 13 "Advice for Troubled Times," when the author explained the different types of counselors available and where you can find them. He doesn't just tell you to get help and leave you hanging, he actually gives you practical resources.

There is only one thing about the book I didn't like. Several times within each chapter, the author refers to a previous or future chapter for additional info. on a topic he mentions. I didn't like that because I don't want to keep flipping back and forth in the book to find out what the author is referring to. I'd rather be able to just read through it all the first time, and then go back to whatever topics peaked my interest.

Overall, I thing Beating the Marriage Odds is a great book. I've been married 15 years and I found some helpful advice in it, but I think the book is best for engaged couples and a great resource for pre-marital counselors. "Beating The Marriage Odds" Book Review

I think it is so sad that the statistic for staying together forever in marriage is only 50%. For second marriages, it is even worse - 25%!! Jeepers, what can be done about that? Well, the first thing I can recommend for those of you who are thinking about getting married, are engaged, or are already married is to read this awesome book, "Beating the Marriage Odds."
This book is written by William Campbell. He says, "My wife Phyllis and I have a passion to help couples in troubled marriages and to assist those who are about to marry. You can avoid many of the common pitfalls that cause couples to stumble, and we are here to show you how."

William Campbell is a practicing pastor, and graduate of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, with a Masters Degree and a Certificate in Christian Counseling from the American Association of Christian Counselors.

I personally have been married for 5 years, my husband is a pastor, and we struggle every day to keep our marriage strong. This book has helped us grow again in our relationship. I have been worried that adding another baby into our family is only going to create more tension and distance in our relationship, so I have really appreciated focusing on our marriage again and working to make it stronger. I know many of you can relate. It appears that so many people have the perfect relationship, but we all struggle. Marriage takes work every day. I have found "Beating the Marriage Odds" to be extremely helpful for both my hubby and I.

The book has such awesome principles for creating a good foundation for marriage, tips for keeping the relationship strong, and help with avoiding common pitfalls. It has chapters on finances, mind games, communication, fighting fair, trust and so much more. One of my favorite chapters is the one on communication, which is actually the leading cause of marital breakdowns. My husband and I are complete opposites, and we are constantly screwing up our communication. This chapter had SO MANY helpful thoughts and suggestions. (Now if I could only follow them...)

The book is easy to read, not preachy, and I highly recommend it to all of you who are engaged or married. I think that with how hard marriage is, we all could use a little refresher to work to make our relationships stronger. Just a few minutes a day of reading this with your significant other could make a HUGE difference in your lives!

You can buy this book online, at Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com, or Booktopia.
