I absolutely love fairy tale books...love the whole happily ever after and skipping through the flowers feeling that you get after reading one.  I am always on the look out for some great children's books to share with our Kids Ministry at church and when I saw this book come through I knew that I had to take a peek at it too.

The illustrations are bright and colorful, the story simply sweet and the message at the heart of the book is one that every family will be blessed by.  I know the sweet little faces at church are going to love this book and I have no doubt that your sweet little faces at home would love it too!

The Rose Princess and the Special Giftis the story of a special girl in an idyllic kingdom who learns about sharing and generosity.

The Rose Princess wakes up one morning to find that her father, the king, has left her a box of gifts. As she continues throughout her day (walking around with no parental supervision or security staff!), the Rose Princess encounters others who seem more in need of these gifts than herself, so she parcels them out. She returns home worried that her father will be upset with her, and is amazed to discover that he is actually proud of her for acts of kindness.

The story itself is simple, and not -like many children's books these days- filled with jokes and innuendo for the parents' benefit. In its simplicity however there are layers of depth that lead to question and answer sessions and many re-reads. There are, in fact, many lessons here beyond the obvious. I couldn't help but wonder if it was at all inspired by the parable of the talents.

My kids really liked this book, especially my five year old daughter. Beyond the story, she loves the illustrations of the wide-eyed princess, who embodies every little girl's idea of what a princess ought to be. It is also a good length for a kids' book, long enough to satiate the children's desire for a good story, but not so long that the parent starts to fantasize about margaritas or mentally compose shopping lists halfway through.

When I read this book, I saw the symbolism of the King being our God the Father, giving us our gifts that are unique to each of us; and the princess, as myself, His child.  I like that this book is a character building book, building qualities such as generosity and sharing and giving away what you have in order to help people in need.  They learn that with a positive attitude and a giving heart, you can really impact someone else's life in a great Godly way; so I like the lessons in this book.

My daughter loved the pictures in this book, the bright look, and she loves all things princesses!  The book went through emotions- happiness, empathy, sadness... and it seemed like my daughter was feeling each emotion as it went along according to her facial features during the read and her comments along the way.  I can conclude that it definitely captivated my 3.5 year old's attention!

Children's Books with a Message! Come Read About It!

We are a family that LOVES to read. Growing up, my mom loved to read to us and did so often, instilling in us a love of reading.  Now as a mother myself, I love to read to my own children, and already see a love of reading in them as well.  We love all sorts of books, but as a mother, I am always thrilled to find great books that teach my children a good moral lesson.

I was recently contacted by Bring It On! Communications and asked if I was interested in reviewing some Deep River Books. Of course we were!! We were sent 2 children's books, The Rose Princess and the Special Gift by Mike de Vetter, andPookster and the Unloose Tooth by Rhonda Funk, part of the Pookster and Bubs series of books.

The Rose Princess and the Special Gift is about a princess whose father gives her a package full of gifts with a note encouraging her to use them wisely.  She goes on a journey and meets many people in need, and has to decide whether to keep the gifts for herself, or help those in need by giving them the gifts.

I was very excited to read The Rose Princess and the Special Gift, as our homeschool curriculum had recently touched on the talents and gifts God gives us and the need for sharing them with others.  My kids immediately made the comparison of the king and the gifts to God and the talents/gifts He gives us.  They loved that the princess chose to give her gifts to help those in need, and this opened a discussion of gifts and talents we have, and how we can use them to help others in need. 

Pookster and the Unloose Tooth is also a very fun, entertaining book! This book is about a girl, Pookster, who wants to lose her teeth so badly she prays that she will lose them.  She is unwilling, however, to wait until her teeth (and God) are ready, and with the help of some dental floss, a door knob, and a big sister, takes care of it herself.  Now all she wants is for her teeth to grow back in!  This story teaches us the lesson of waiting on God and His perfect timing.

Logan is at the age where he is losing teeth, so this was fun for all of us as we could relate to the character.  This book also came with a read-along CD, which we love!  The kids love the read-along books, and it's nice for me when I need to do something and want them busy and out of trouble! 

We loved each of these books equally, although my daughter, of course, adores The Rose Princess book.  These books are wonderful in that they encourage your child to learn from the actions of the characters in the stories.  I highly recommend these books for any child in your life!

This children's book is called "The Rose Princess and the Special Gift" by Mike de Vetter.

Elayna read this book and loved it! She enjoyed the pictures...

And she said that her favorite part was when the Princess gave with Kindness.

The Princess had been given some gifts by her father and she chose to share those gifts with others who needed help.

When I asked Elayna what she learned from this book, she said, "I learned to be kind and to give to others."

I'm sure that this is a book my girls will read again and again!

My Thoughts

I wish that there were more books like this in the world. Books that taught children that it is better to give than to receive. Sadly in this day in age some children are selfish and don't realize how hard their parents have to work to give them what they've got. They don't take care of their stuff and don't seem to care about anything. I know this is not the case with all children but it just seems that more and more often you are seeing it!

The Rose Princess is a beautiful role model. What little girl does not want to be a princess and to be able to read about one that is so generous and giving is wonderful! My daughter loves this book! Here is what she had to say........

Rose is a princess who got a gift from her Dad. She gave away her neat stuff to the strangers so they could be happy again. The strangers needed her stuff more than she did. It was nice of her to give it away. She is a very nice princess. I would like to be like her. I would not be mean. I would always be nice. I can be like her and help others too!

The Rose Princess and the Special Gift20

The Rose Princess and the Special Gift written by Mike de Vetter with illustrations by Travis Orams is an amazing story of a beautiful princess who shares a message of selflessness with the readers in a fun and beautiful way.

From the fun, cartoon-y animations to the message of giving to those in need, Little Miss A and I LOVED this book from start to finish. I must say that I even cried because of the amazing kindness of the Princess and her Father, the King, and of course the meaning behind it all.

Even at 3.5 years old Miss A gathered a lot from this book’s message and asked questions throughout the entire story. I love talking to her about the people in need and am glad that it opened up conversation about how we can help people and give gifts to those in need and what God would want us to do in situations like these. 

We also like that the characters are diverse and that the author and illustrator thought the small things through and incorporated them into this great tale.

This book certainly has re-readability and is not something you will tire from easily. Plus, I really enjoy that the story is detailed, yet didn’t seem long or drawn out to me at all.

I would recommend this book to those trying to teach their children to be kind, share, help those in need, and even those families who’s children already have these great qualities. It’s definitely a “must have” in every children’s collection and I’ve also thought of giving the gift as a graduation present because of the relevant message.

The Rose Princess and the Special Gift is a beautiful story about a gift the king left for his daughter. Inside the box is a hat, coins, and reading glasses. She puts the items in her bag and goes for a walk. Along the way, she meets three different people who happen to each need one of the gift items in her bag. She generously gives her gifts away. When she arrives home and sees her dad, the king, she cries because she's given away the gifts he gave her. He told her not to cry because she used the gifts wisely, and surprisingly, in walk the three people she gave the gifts to. The king is very pleased by his daughter's generosity and they all celebrate together with a special dinner.

My 4 year old son and I read this book together. I honestly don't have anything I disliked about the book. In fact, we both really enjoyed it and he keeps asking when I'm going to write about the book on the computer so he can have the book back! The illustrations are really nicely done, perfectly capturing the facial expressions of the characters. I also like how the three people the princess encounters are of three different races. The "moral" of the story is also great - about giving generously and how much it pleases the people you give to, your father(Heavenly or earthly), and yourself. My son said the book was wrong because it said she gave her gifts away, but really she just shared them, just like you're supposed to do. So, although he didn't get the "generous" concept exactly, he definitely understood the message of the book. He also said it is a "cool book."

I totally recommend this book to anyone with young boys or girls. I think it's good for kids 4 and up, maybe to about 10 years old.

Our Thoughts…

The Rose Princess and the Special Gift by Mike de Vetter is a wonderful book that teaches children the importance of being generous with what you have as well sharing with others. A great character building book teaching such an impacting message!
My nearly three year old daughter is quite the fan of this book! She was captivated by the very colorful cheery illustrations as well as the story itself. I love when my daughter shows concern towards others and she was asking many questions about the people the princess came across in the story. My daughter has always been very observant of others and very vocal in her concerns so I was happy that this book really sparked her interest!
I recommend this book for the little princess in your own life and I know I personally am going to be looking for more books by this author.  This book is geared toward children ages 4-8 probably because it has a lot of words and the younger crowd just might not have the attention span for it.

This book's theme is giving from a generous heart and not withholding anything.  The Rose Princess is given three gifts from her father.  In her adventures through the day she comes across three people in need and she has the means to help meet their needs.  She gives her help generously and ungrudgingly.  I just loved the way the author brings out generosity.  This is a message that all young children need reinforced all the time.  Giving with no strings attached even when it means me giving up.  Illustrations are as bright and bold and vibrant as the message of the book.  What better thing to share with a young one than a book with a generous message, such a teaching tool.

Review of The Rose Princess and the Special Gift by Mike de Vetter - Children's Book

Recently, I was sent a wonderful children's book to review called The Rose Princess and the Special Gift by Mike de Vetter.  My daughter absolutely fell in love with this book.

The story is about a princess called the Rose Princess, who is given three items by her father the King. As she makes her travels throughout the day, she ends up giving away her gifts to people in need. At the end of the book, she is concerned that her father might be upset with her for giving the gifts away, but her father praises her for making a self sacrifice of helping others. He says, "Many people were blessed today because of your generosity."

The illustrations in this book by Travis Orams are very detailed and the colors are eye catching. My daughter asked a lot of questions about the pictures. She would say that little girl is crying or that man is wearing a hat.

My daughter really liked it because it was a good story, and also because the King looked like her Daddy and she kept referring to the Rose Princess as herself. It was really cute!

I received the Rose Princess and the Special Gift book to review. The first thing that popped out at me was the illustration. Travis Orams did a fantastic job illustrating. The bright colors really draw you in. It's cartoony enough that even my youngest who is 22 months sat down through the entire book and my 3 year old had me read it three times in a row. I love this book. My girls loved this book. Mike De Vetter is a great children's author. There were a few words that were a bit steep for my little ones but I think it's good to change and helps expand their vocabulary. The message it conveys is to share and help others that are in need.

Yesterday, my son Phoenix and I both read The Rose Princess and the Special Gift for the first time together, and we both LOVED it! It's a bit wordy for a 2-year old, but it did hold his interest for pretty much the whole story, which really impressed me!

It's a story about a princess whose father gives her three gifts... but she ends up giving them all away instead of keeping them for herself. She was afraid that her father was going to be upset at her for giving all of her special gifts away, but he was very proud of her for choosing to share them instead of keeping them to herself. It's an amazing story that teaches children about generosity, tuning in to the feelings of others, and the joy of giving.

The story was well written, but what I really think held Phoenix's attention were the illustrations. They illustrations by Travis Orams were amazing and really brought this story to life! (Click on the photos in the post for more detailed images.)

I loved reading this book! It is still a little wordy for my 9 month old, but it was a really quick read for myself that I completely enjoyed. I would say that this book is perfect for girls ages 5-10.  Not only is the book well written and easy for a child to understand, it also has bright colorful illustrations. This book is great to teach your child(ren) the importance of generosity and sharing.

My Review:

Mike de Vetter was a man that never wanted to grow up.  He loved to work with children so that is why this book got written.  It is beautifully illustrated book about a king that lived in a kingdom and had a beautiful little daughter he called the Rose Princess, she woke up one morning to find a large box at the end of her bed and in the box was a letter from her father The King.  When the Princess opened the box she found all kind of things as she packed everything in her bag she went for a walk.  As she meet people she would get one of her prizes from her pocket and give it to that person.  Later in the day when she meet her father The King, the Rose Princess cried because she didn't have anything left, the people she had met during the day needed the things more than she did.  That night as The King was putting his daughter to bed, he told The Rose Princess that he was so proud of her,

A beautiful book for children and I want to think Bring It On for sending me this book for review.
