Day by Day with the Best of Spurgeon - Book Review!

Review done by Miguel

As one who has devoted his studies to the field of Christian Apologetics and theology, I often find myself very unsatisfied with daily devotional books. There are two major reasons why this is the case. One reason is length. For someone who is working full-time and is also enrolled in a graduate program it is difficult to spend a long amount of time each morning reading a devotional book. The second and by far the most important reason I do not like the majority of daily devotional books, is that they are theologically superficial and incredibly man-centered. Day by Day with the Best of Spurgeon has provided an answer to both of these objections.

Day by Day is a phenomenal devotional book. There is only one page of reading for each day and it is theologically rich! Dolores E. Coupland has done a great job of compiling some of Charles Spurgeon's greatest works and has placed it in short segments for the reader to chew on. This devotional is Christ-centered instead of focusing on all the things we need to do.

One of the things that just completely changed my Christian walk was when it was pointed out to me that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not for the unbeliever alone. Rather it is for the believer just as much as for the unbeliever. For the unbeliever it is the message of salvation and for the believer it is the message of the mercy and grace that has already saved you and allows you to glorify God daily because of that.

If you're looking for a devotional that will be focused on "being a better friend in the work place" or "8 ways to become better organized" this is not the devotional for you. However, if your desire is to wake up each morning and use a tool that will help you to be focused on Christ and his glory and his gospel then I strongly recommend Day by Day.

Book Review: Day by Day with the Best of Spurgeon

Day by Day with the Best of Spurgeon
On the love and loveliness of Jesus
Compiled by: Dolores E. Coupland
ISBN: 978-1-935265-13-9
Publisher: Deep River Books
Publishing Date: 2010
Retail price: $15.99

Dolores E. Coupland's heart was greatly impacted by Charles H. Spurgeon (1834-1892)'s devotional book, Morning and Evening. That led her to research his sermons, collect his choice writings, and put them all together into this lovely, inspirational devotional.  Thanks, Dolores!

Are you passionately in love with Jesus? If not, you need to read this book. If so, you will appreciate this book. This book's central theme is Jesus, His love, His loveliness, and His sacrifice for us at the cross. May you take the time to ponder Who Jesus Christ is to you and what His work on the cross means to you. Charles Spurgeon (aka "the Prince of Preachers") beautifully leads us with his words to places where Jesus lived, suffered, and died. All for us sinners...imagine that! Often, his description is so vivid and poetic.  Spurgeon's teachings are Biblically sound, thought-provoking, and at times soul-piercing. It is obvious when you read Spurgeon's writings that his passion is to extol Christ above all else and to preach the doctrine of Christ crucified.

I highly recommend this devotional. I collect devotional books.Day by Day with the Best of Spurgeon is a wonderful addition to my collection (30th devotional). Yes, I also own Morning and Evening by Spurgeon :). By the way, I think it's so cool that God mightily used Spurgeon for His glory even though Spurgeon never had theological schooling and he struggled with depression most of his life. If you ever wonder how God could possibly use you, please remember to never underestimate His power, grace, mercy, and love! Trust in Him day by day.

You know how much I love books, love to read, and am absolutely addicted to the written word.  One thing you may not know though is that I devotional type books the best.

I have stacks and stacks of devotional books that I have read over the years and a few that I will re-read each year (My Utmost for His Highest, by Oswald Chambers and Jesus Calling, by Sarah Young).  When I saw this book, Day by Day with the Best of Spurgeon, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

Each day is rich with the words straight from Charles Spurgeon's sermons and each day has me completely captivated.  I read through them once, then I go back and re-read it so that the words soak into my soul.  Beautifully written, power packed sermons pieced together to make an impact on your daily quiet time.

Thought provoking and insightful this daily nugget fits perfectly into my day and makes a profound impact on starting my day thinking "on the love and loveliness of Jesus".

Have you ever had a heart-changing, life-changing experience? Dolores E. Coupland had one approximately twenty years ago when she picked up Charles H. Spurgeon's devotional book, "Morning and Evening." As she read those amazing passages on the love and loveliness of Jesus, her heart was captivated. In fact, it was not only captivated but it was changed. Since then it has been Coupland's passion to share this aspect of Spurgeon's writings with others. This has led to many hours spent going through his sermons, collecting choice thoughts and assembling them into devotionals.

It has been said that if we would read Matthew 27 every day we would obtain and retain a passionate love for Jesus. Well, these daily meditations have been designed with the same purpose in mind. The cross was central to Spurgeon and so it is here. This whole book is centered on Jesus, on his great sacrifice for us and on what he means to us. He is our salvation, our treasure, our heaven, our all. Spurgeon once wrote, "Are you trusting in the cross? Are you resting in Jesus? If not, may the Lord teach you this blessed privilege. There is no joy like it. There is no strength like it. There is no life like it. There is no peace like it. At the cross we find our heaven. It is through the cross that all heavenly, holy things abound within our hearts." Yes, we must dwell at the cross and these daily meditations will assist us in staying there.

Have you ever visited Gethsemane, that place that is so appropriately named "olive-press"? What about Gabbatha? Have you spent some precious moments there? And what about that most important place of all--Golgotha? Have you been there? Oh, it is of the utmost importance that you find your way there! In fact, your very life depends on it.

So come. Let us open up the pages of this book, day by day, and follow Charles Spurgeon as he leads us to all those precious places where our Savior lived, suffered and then died for our redemption.

My Review:

This is a nice size book that a lot of Charles Haddon Spurgeon's messages were complied by Dolores E Copeland into this book.  It is a day by day devotional that you can use alone with your Bible study .  The book starts out with Jan. 1 and goes until Dec. 31 with a different devotional every day.  It has 366 pages so it will keep you busy.  Each day starts out with a scripture and then goes on to explain his idea of what that scripture means. This would be a nice book for your own study or as a gift.

"Charles Haddon Spurgeon ( 1834-1892) was born in Essex England, and is recognized by all Christendom as the "Prince of Preachers."  Although he died over a hundred years ago he is still one of the most widely read Christian authors.  His accomplishments are astounding considering his relatively short life.  He preached his first sermon at the age of 16, became a pastor at 17, and in his twenties was already preaching to thousands in his famous Metropolitan Tabernacle in London.  The number of sermons he preached is amazing-3,563 are published, making up 63 volumes." taken from back of book.
